Gum Sandarac is a natural product, derived from a coniferous tree. The lumps can be dissolved in alcohol to create a varnish that is suitable as an isolating layer in oil painting and as a traditional top coat for egg tempera. It forms a brittle layer, so is only suitable for use on a rigid support.
Gum Sandarac can also be used for preparing paper and vellum for writing. It acts as an ink resist; holds the ink and prevents it from spreading, resulting in sharper letters and less likelihood of bleeding. To use wrap the lumps into a small muslin type bag to make a pounce. As the crystals are crushed the powder will come through the fabric and onto the paper.
Gum Sandarac is non-toxic but, usual hygiene precautions should be observed.
